New Hospital at St. Elizabeths East Coming Late 2024 to Ward 8, District of Columbia
The New Hospital at St. Elizabeths East is a public-private partnership between the Government of the District of Columbia and Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) designed to provide high quality healthcare to the residents and communities of Wards 7 and 8 and all District residents. The project includes the construction of a 136-bed acute care hospital with maternal health and trauma services, a 77,000 square foot ambulatory pavilion with outpatient services, diagnostic imaging and physician offices facility, a 500 space garage and two additional urgent care facilities to be located in Wards 7 and 8.
Both parties will invest significant resources in the construction and operations of the new hospital. UHS will operate, manage and maintain the hospital and its services throughout the 75-year lease, while the District will fund the project’s construction ($375M) and retain ownership of the land. In addition, UHS will be working to extend the partnership with the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and The GW Medical Faculty Associates to this project, serving as the academic and physician arms of the network, respectively.
All of these new facilities will be fully integrated into the current GW hospital healthcare system, creating a comprehensive academic medical network across the District. This system will be designed to expand access to care, increase quality and improve outcomes and health equity for all residents. We look forward to making this vision a reality and to advancing healthcare in our nation’s capital. We will continue to keep you informed of our progress and we thank you for your ongoing support and interest in this critical project.
The new community hospital will be centrally located in Ward 8 on the St. Elizabeths East campus, near the Congress Heights Metro Station, just north of the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
